Constitutional Court Denounces PMs Words
The President of the Constitutional Court, Tülay Tugcu has announced that the court would file a complaint against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his comments on the courts decision regarding the presidential election in April.
When the ruling Justice and Development Party had announced Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül's candidature for presidency in April, opposition parties had boycotted the election.
As a result, parliament assembled with fewer than the 367 members to reach a quorum.
"A disgrace for the judiciary"
The Constitutional Court had been asked to decide whether such a majority was necessary, and it decided that it was. Prime Minister Erdogan later commented on the court's "367 decision" as "a disgrace for the judiciary".
Court President Tugcu claims that the Supreme Court was targeted and that it would file a complaint against Erdogan.
In a statement released yesterday evening, Tugcu claimed that Erdogan's comments were disrespectful. She went on to say that decisions made by the Constitutional Court were based on the constitution and that subjective accusations had no legal basis. (NZ/EÜ/AG/EÜ)
